Is All CBD the Same?

Everyone is excited about CBD products on the market and the potential of CBD to help promote wellness and health. However, not all CBD products are equal, and understanding the difference between CBD products and their ingredients is important if you plan on using CBD regularly.

Here’s everything you need to know about CBD, from where it comes from to how it should be taken, including why not all CBD is the same.

CBD: What It Is and How It Works

CBD is the abbreviation for cannabidiol, which is a cannabinoid. Cannabinoids are found in two different places in nature: (1) the human body, which produces endocannabinoids; and (2) the cannabis plant, which produces phytocannabinoids.

Cannabinoids of both types can interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, or ECS. Once it enters the bloodstream, CBD connects with ECS receptors. This gives it the opportunity to trigger certain reactions and enhance the body’s natural functions.

Cannabinoids have been shown to help reduce stress and anxiety, lower pain levels, assist in delivering better and longer-lasting sleep, and many other potential health benefits. Many people find that using CBD products on a daily basis improves their wellbeing.

CBD Effects on the Body

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is what is known as a homeostatic regulator, meaning it works to help the body achieve homeostasis, or balance. Your ECS has receptor sites all through the body, which allow communication from the outside of your cells to the inside.

When you take CBD, it may activate these receptors and start the communication process. Just like natural cannabinoids produced by your body, CBD has been shown to help moderate cellular behavior.

The most common areas in which cannabinoids are shown to affect the body include:

Mood

Many people take CBD to reduce their stress levels, lower their anxiety, and improve their mood.

Sleep

If you are having trouble sleeping, CBD might help your body naturally shift into relaxed mode so you can drift off more easily.

Pain

One of the biggest reasons people take CBD is to help reduce aches and pain from arthritis, autoimmune conditions, spinal degeneration, or headaches.

Appetite

CBD has also been proven to improve appetite and reduce nausea, making it valuable to anyone struggling with food intake.

Memory

Studies show improved memory for some subjects who take CBD products, holding out hope for those with recall and focus issues.

Not all CBD is the same, and which type you take is likely to impact how effective it is for you.

Understanding the Hemp Plant

CBD comes from the industrial hemp plant, which is a strain of Cannabis sativa.

Cannabis plants are not all the same. Each type and strain of plant can contain a different concentration of cannabinoids, as well as other compounds like terpenes, which can have similar effects as cannabinoids as well as lengthening their active time in the body.

Aside from CBD, the most well known active cannabinoid in cannabis plants is THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol. Unlike CBD, THC is a psychoactive compound, meaning it can make you feel “high”.

The United States made CBD legal at a federal level, but only if it comes from a specific strain of cannabis that contains less than .3% THC content. The plant from which legal CBD is extracted is the Cannabis sativa plant.

Strains that met the parameters for CBD legality are known as industrial hemp. In these strains, CBD is the predominant cannabinoid, with other cannabinoids taking a back seat and THC being under the .3% limit.

Some strains of Cannabis sativa can contain more than the legally allowed amount of THC. These strains of cannabis are classified as marijuana. This is why, when buying CBD products, you should always check labels and make sure the CBD was extracted from industrial hemp. All Yummy CBD products are made from high-quality, legal industrial hemp containing less than 0.3% THC.

Different Types of CBD Extracts

Once you’ve determined that the CBD product you are buying has been derived from industrial hemp, it’s time to dig deeper into what type of extraction has been used for the product. There are three main CBD extractions, each with their own special appeal.

CBD Isolate

CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD. This CBD is extracted from the industrial hemp plant, but everything else is stripped away, including other cannabinoids, all terpenes, and anything else that could have any sort of reactive effect.

The CBD isolate is typically mixed with an edible carrier oil, so it can be taken via a dropper. Many manufacturers use a medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil as the carrier. MCT is a fatty acid that breaks down quickly in the body, meaning instead of being stored as fat, it is metabolized swiftly and used for energy instead.

The advantage of CBD isolate is that it is very predictable and there are no other ingredients in it, so buyers know exactly what they can expect. The disadvantage is that this kind of CBD extract is the least effective, because CBD works better when used in conjunction with other compounds from the hemp plant.

Broad-Spectrum CBD

The next step up from CBD isolate is broad-spectrum CBD. This contains CBD as well as selected other non-psychoactive cannabinoids plus certain terpenes from the hemp plant. These are thought to enhance the efficacy of the CBD product, making it more effective and lengthening the amount of time it remains effective in the body.

Broad spectrum CBD is still completely THC free, with even the trace amounts present in the hemp plant removed during the extraction and purification process. Broad-spectrum CBD can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer depending on which cannabinoids and terpenes they choose to include.

The upside of broad-spectrum CBD is that is may provide a wider range of benefits, thanks to the additional ingredients. It might also feel more potent, thanks to what is known as the “entourage effect”.

This entourage effect is a phenomenon where using different compounds in the hemp plant together has been shown to deliver a much more effective experience that using simple isolated compounds. The other cannabinoids and terpenes present in broad-spectrum CBD might make it work better for you, or might make it more likely to address a wider variety of health issues.

The downside of broad-spectrum CBD is that it’s still missing at least one ingredient that is capable of taking the entourage effect to peak level. Without the inclusion of this important compound, you still won’t get maximum potency in your CBD products.

Full-Spectrum CBD

Like the name states, full-spectrum CBD uses all of the active compounds in the hemp plant. This includes CBD, other non-psychoactive cannabinoids like CBG or CBN, terpenes, and trace amounts of THC.

The amount of THC in full-spectrum CBD products is extremely small, since it comes from industrial hemp and is subject to the legal limitations. The best way to describe the amount of THC present is by calling it a “trace” amount. It’s really, really tiny, especially when you look at the amount present in a single CBD dose. Even if you consider the amount in a whole bottle of CBD oil or an entire bag of gummies, it’s not enough to have a psychoactive effect.

The biggest pro in favor of full-spectrum CBD is that you get the full power of the entourage effect. If you’re looking for the most complete CBD product on the market, this could be right for you. Many people find when comparing full-spectrum CBD against CBD isolate or even broad-spectrum CBD products that the full spectrum stands head and shoulders above the other two.

And although full-spectrum CBD contains THC, it is only a trace amount. You can’t get high off of the amount of THC in a full-spectrum product, even if you were to take very large amounts. Since an effective dose of THC is usually between 5 and 10 mg, it would require ingesting a massive amount of full spectrum CBD to reach that threshold.

All Yummy CBD products contain full-spectrum CBD. This helps you get the full effect of the different benefits available, and it’s more likely that you’ll find that taking CBD will work for you.

Different Types of CBD Products

There are so many different types of CBD products that it can be hard to keep track of them all. CBD is sold in everything from vapes to bath bombs. However, the most common types of CBD products are ones you can take by mouth, to get the CBD into your bloodstream as quickly and efficiently as possible.

CBD Oil

CBD oil (or tincture) is usually an MCT oil infused with the CBD extract. Yummy CBD uses a pure coconut oil as the carrier, infused with full-spectrum CBD for a powerful, effective, and easy way to take the product that can be precisely measured for reliable results.

We offer two types of Yummy CBD oil:

Orange Zest CBD Oil

Our original CBD oil tincture contains 33 mg of CBD per mL, has a nice orange flavor, and is certified organic. It is easy to dose with the included dropper so you can experiment until you hit the right amount.

Mellow Mint CBD Oil

Our CBD oil sleep version contains 67 mg of CBD plus 1 mg of melatonin per mL. The provided dropper lets you adjust your dose nightly for optimized sleep effects. The sleep version has extra CBD with the addition of melatonin, a natural sleep aid produced by your own body, to aid in efficacy.  Each bottle of Yummy CBD oil contains 30 mL of product.

CBD Gummies

CBD gummies are enjoyable, chewy little treats that can be taken discreetly as needed to achieve the desired effect. They are made with the same high-grade full-spectrum CBD we use in our oils.

We also have two types of Yummy CBD gummies:

Fruity Delight CBD Gummies

Our regular CBD gummies contain 24 mg of CBD per gummy and there’s no need to measure like there is with oil and a dropper. Just pop one in your mouth as needed.

Fruitful Dreams CBD Gummies

Our CBD sleep gummies contain 24 mg of CBD and 1 mg of melatonin per gummy, and are designed to be taken in the evening.

You can take CBD gummies anytime and enjoy a slightly slower reaction time and longer lasting effects than with CBD oils.

Ways to Take CBD

Obviously, each type of CBD product is designed to be taken differently. CBD oil is best taken sublingually, meaning you squirt the oil from the dropper into the place directly under your tongue and hold it there for 30 to 60 seconds before swallowing.

Sublingual application means the CBD enters the bloodstream directly through the tiny blood vessels known as capillaries, which are very close to the surface in the sublingual tissues under the tongue.

This is an extremely fast-acting way to take CBD. It usually only takes 20-30 minutes to start feeling the effects of the CBD oil, regardless of whether or not you’ve eaten recently. Many people prefer CBD oil for this reason. The effects generally last a few hours.

CBD gummies are chewed and ingested, meaning they go through the first phase of metabolism before the CBD becomes available to entre your bloodstream. This might mean it takes a little longer for you to start feeling the effects, but the effects may also last longer.

Eating CBD gummies can also yield slightly different effects depending on whether or not your stomach is empty or full, since your metabolism works at different rates depending on whether it is already working to break down food.

You can take CBD via just one method, or use both Yummy CBD oil and Yummy CBD gummies to achieve optimal results. Keeping a journal detailing your mood, pain levels, sleep patterns, food intake, exercise, and CBD intake can help you determine what method works best for you and when.
